Ethical Wills and
Spiritual-Ethical Wills

Documenting Your Ethical Will

An ethical will

(I call it a spiritual-ethical will)
is a way to
  • rediscover your history and your roots, and
  • explore who you are (what you value, your stories and life lessons)
to preserve the past and the present
as a gift for your loved ones and future generations.

Here's what Andrew Weil, MD says about spiritual health and ethical wills in his new book, Healthy Aging (excerpted in Time Magazine, October 17, 2005):

"One way to promote spiritual well-being is through the writing of an ethical will ....I...recommend that you undertake the composition of an ethical will. No matter how old you are, it will make you take stock of your life experience and distill from it the values and wisdom you have gained....It can be a wonderful gift to your family at the end of your life, but I think its primary importance is what it can give you in the midst of life."

Andrew Weil, MD is founder and director of the Program in Integrative Medicine and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Arizona.
